Timepieces for the Blind

Filed Under (Euro Watch News) by Watch-Expert on 11-12-2008

A lot of blind people read the time, touching with the fingertips the dial of hunting watches, which glass lid opens. The first wrist watch models for the blind, one of which was Tact Watch Model by Breguet, appeared back in the 18th century .

Tips of the fingers of some  persons are sensitive enough to read the time practically accurately with a single touch.  But a lot of people face problems, reading the time in such a way, let alone the expanding of the probability of error, because hour hands can be deformed or broken because of touching.

An Austrian from Vienna suggested substituting the Roman numerals of the watch face with conventional symbols, the form of which in an figurative way recall to the figure of hours which they represent.

The method of Lukaschovsky, named after its artficer, is about representing one hour by a dot, two hours by two dots, three hours by a triangle, four hours by a square, five hours by a five-pointed star, six hours by a zero. In the first half of the watch face, these symbols are convex; in the second they are represented symmetrically but they are concave.
The hour hands are made of steel and are resistant enough to frequent contacts.

However, another method proved to be more easy to use - a watchmaker P. Tissot from Locle, Swiss devised the system, using the Braille type, already known to the blind.

Smaller salient dots represent the minute divisions.

Filed Under (Watch Series) by Watch-Expert on 18-07-2008

Sometimes an artist gets inspiration where least expected. For instance, the Cartier Tank watch was inspired in 1917 by the new Renault tanks which Cartier saw in use on the Western Front. The prototype watch was presented by Cartier to General John Pershing of the American Expeditionary Force.

There are now over thirty variants of Tank watch, in both automatic and quartz versions. The two of them are designed for ladies. Their lines and proportions are similar to those of tanks found on First World War battlefields. They are both a square and a rectangle, yet elegant. The Lady’s Cartier Tank replica watches have stylish black leather band and reliable quartz Japan movement. Besides, they are water resistant.

The Panerai watch model produced in 1936 for the first Submersible is back again. The initial timepiece marked the appearance of a wristwatch manufacture under the Panerai name.
